Mike - you're quite right, I should resist the temptation to air my views on this forum. But It's hard...

Thanks PB for the travel advice. As I look out my window, all I see is white - so we'll see tomorrow morning.

Cheers

A wonderful selection of cruise ships from Ted - you can't beat dawn & dusk light at Dover !

Not very good light late Friday at dusk shortly after the arrival of the British DEEP VOLANS from Ymuiden.

Earlier in the afternoon the SOLENT GUARDIAN came in from Ramsgate.

Waiting for the tide - the SOLENT GUARDIAN Later came into the Wellington Dock & so may be staying for a few days.
Not the first time she's been to Dover.

Del - I don'r really want to get involved with politics here , there's other forums for that, but I do get the feeling that the British Government is making up it's BREXIT polIcies as it goes along . . . . .

Yes Mike, I listened to that R4 Brexit show, more than a bit worrying, I thought. But all is well, Mr Grayling says everything will be OK. So that's alright then. Mind you, some folk think his comments were a trifle - how should we say - optimistic maybe?

The recent photos, especially the old uns, have been great.

In theory, I will be passing through Dover on Sunday, if the wind / snow lets me, that is!

I look forward to seeing how the dock development is getting on.

MIND THE GAP
A series of photographs taken from the Operations Room at Dover Coastguard of the cruise liners visiting the port.
Depending on our shift pattern we could catch the early arrivals as most of them appeared on the horizon between 4 and 5 am.
I must admire the local pilots on their skill in bringing the larger liners through the narrow entrance of the Eastern especially with the cross tide.My thought also went out to the Quartermaster on the helm as the gap closed.

CELEBRITY CENTURY photographed on the 11th May 2008.

DISNEY MAGIC photographed on the 12th June 2010.

CARNIVAL SPLENDOUR photographed on the 10th July 2008.

EURODAM photographed on the 9th June 2010.

SAGA ROSE photographed on the 24th July 2007.

Yes indeed Del and Mike, the Question Time people were in Dover yesterday and yes the main local concern was the possibility, after Brexit, of 29 mile ( a figure reached after analysis it seems) queues across Kent as trucks wait to get through the Port of Dover. Many were/are rightly concerned. The cameras love us lately as also in town filming yesterday were the crew from BBC's Flog It. They were filming just beneath the 'observation tower' and here they are...

I believe the presenter is Paul Martin, you can see him there chatting to camera...

Below we have a pic of Llanddwyn Island and MoragM in the one shot. Llanddwyn adjusts the Exclusion Zone markers in the foreground, as Morag ambles by behind. In the far background you can just see all the heavy DWDR hardware in operation. Quite an armada of heavy metal there...I sould have made more of it in the picture... PB

Del - your post about ‘Question Time’ from Dover - there was an interesting BBC programme on 8th.March called ‘BREXIT – THE SHIPPING FORECAST’ with reports from Calais, Rotterdam & Gdansk about how trade patterns would change after Brexit.
The main points was the lack of preparedness for the potential vast increase of Customs bureaucracy & the delays that would occur - the Dutch seem be the only people that are doing serious preparations & Calais spoke of the likelihood of increased direct France/Eire shipping routes to avoid British borders & Customs confusion.
Well worth a listen - available on the Radio-4 I-player.

Thursday afternoon & the AFON LLIGWY & LLANDWYN ISLAND were keeping an eye on two barges of concrete castings in the old Jetfoil Terminal, brought to Dover from Belfast by the LADY ARIANE [post 4703].
Some of them look as though they might be part of the decking for the ‘promenade pier’ on the east side of the new marina.

The SMIT YOUNG has retreated to her lay-up berth in Granville Dock - she usually goes out from her Tidal Basin berth to meet the BARENT ZANEN. [posts 4517/4559].
AIS showed the dredger had arrived back in Delfzijl on Wednesday, so maybe she's off the run for a while.

I'm just listening to Question Time from Dover - I wonder what will be on - could it be Brexit? Who will be the first to mention "seamless trade"?

A few more views of the Eastern Docks from the family archives.
The attached were photographed by my late brother David who was a regular visitor to Langdon cliffs.
The first and second photograph were probably taken in the early 70's as the CS Ariel is alongside the Post Office berth. She was broken up on the Medway in 1976.
The third photograph shows trials of the SR.N4 Hovercraft before the Terminal was completed in the Western Docks. In the distance one of the large German Rescue/Salvage tugs on standby.More photos of these famous tugs to follow later.
The last photograph shows the expansion of the new berths at the end of the 70's early 80's.

We have another picture above there of the Dover Lifeboat searching for the missing diver 2/3 days ago. This picture wasn't used previously as for some inexplicable reason it had come out entirely bright blue. The computer has been used since and the picture has been recovered ... to a degree anyway.

That's a further crop of the same picture below to show as best we can the guys searching with determination, as they always do. The conditions were very difficult as you can see.

The diver has still not been found. We understand specialist Police divers are being called in to examine the area around St Margaret's where the missing chap was last seen.. ( see also 4720, 4721, 4723 )

Yesterday we had a visit from our ol' ocean warhorse friend the Cornelis Vrolijk. She comes into Port occasionally and we always assume it is for a crew change and probably was again...and here she be...

You can see 4 members of the crew there on deck in top and centre pix. Three in hi-vis jackets and one without...waiting for the launch.

Nice pic from Ramsgate below there Ted. Nice work again.Smiley

The picture above was taken the day before yesterday and shows Barent Zanen in the background while in the foreground we have Afon Lligwy and Llanddwyn Island moving a fully loaded crane barge into position. The DWDR work powers on.

Below we see the fruits of not only the Barent Zanen labours, but also showing the excellent efforts of all the diggers bulldozers and Volvo trucks...and now... well we have a smooth sanded new 'island' ..

Nice collection below of night pictures Ted. Notoriously difficult to do.. but great shots there.Smiley

MISSING DIVER
_______________

Detectives are carrying out enquiries after a man was reported missing from a boat in Dover.

The man in his 40s was diving in the English Channel yesterday (Monday 12 March 2018) when he failed to return to the boat. He was reported missing to Kent Police at 3.40pm and the Dover Coastguard is conducting extensive searches of the area. Officers are working with partner agencies to establish the circumstances of the incident and locate the missing diver.

Anyone with information that could assist with the enquiries is asked to call 101 quoting reference 12-0844.

Following on from my photographs taken from the Ops room during the day.
Below a series taken at night.
The first one was taken on 28th May 2006 of the harbour. The Japanese cruise ship ASUKA ll can be seen on the cruise terminal.

The TRANSMANCHE ferry COTE D'ALBARTRE alongside the Eastern Arm.12th February 2009.

The reefer HORNBAY discharging alongside the DCT 12th February 2009.

A mist was beginning to roll in across the harbour which was highlighted by the sodium arch lights.I set up my camera on a tripod. The settings were ISO 80 at F6.3 and the speed was 5 seconds...hence the radar scanner looks like a giant fan.

As Mike mentioned in the post below, a diver was lost yesterday off St Margarets and several lifeboats and smaller craft were searching the immediate area and further afield, aided by the Coastguard helicopter ...so far it appears without much luck. Conditions were dismal and rough as you can see in these pictures. The pictures are obviously long range and the quality isn't ideal but you can see how difficult it is searching when the sea is like that.
Time of pictures 5pm (1700 hrs) approx.

The top pic shows the Dungeness Lifeboat almost visibly swallowed by the rough sea. That's another shot of the Lifeboat from Dungeness below. Further below we have Dover Lifeboat also out there in the search. There was a third Lifeboat but not sure which particular Lifeboat it was or from where...may have been from Walmer.

As mentioned...we understand the diver has not been found.

As you can see in those earlier welcome shots further below from Ed (4717)....
Crown Emma was in with us yesterday. The following three pictures show her initially approaching the Port in the grey but calmer conditions of yesterday morning ( 08.20 approx ). Tug Wulf 7, the tug standing in for Dauntless, was helping in the approach while Doughty waited here in the Port for the arrival. The final pic of the three below shows her here in Port. See also 4717.
UPDATE: Crown Emma left us a short while ago this morning and is now on her way to Hamburg.

So that's what became of those ferries Mike .. well I never..
Thanks for all that info and thanks to Andy for the picture Smiley

Yes indeed Del those were crackers from Ted yesterdaySmiley

If we get any further news on the diver we will let everyone know.

Remember the NORD PAS DE CALAIS ?
The former SNCF [French Railways] train ferry that finished up as a freight ferry for ‘Seafrance’ & ‘My Ferry Link’ until the closure of ‘My Ferry Link’ after which she headed south & now operates as the AL ANDALUS EXPRESS between Spain & Tangier.

The former SEAFRANCE MANET is also in service across the Gib.Straits as the POETA LOPEZ ANGLADA

A pal of mine, Andy Wood, is cruising on the NORWEGIAN SPIRIT & saw the ‘NPC’ in drydock in Gibraltar on Monday & has kindly allowed me to post this picture.

There is a strong rumour that the former NPC will return north if the proposed Ramsgate/Ostend freight service resumes - an announcement may be made in the next few months.

Tragically a diver was lost near St.Margarets Bay on Monday.
AIS showed a massive search operation involving three lifeboats, helicopters & other craft that went on well into the evening but sadly without success according to local media.
I would imagine that the search will resume in the morning.
