Not a single ferry in the Port yesterday morning to greet the gorgeous sunrise. Not a single one. The only vessel in Port was our old friend Emerald...the cargo reefer. You can just see her over there on the extreme left at the cargo terminal. She left last evening with a full load onboard bound for Flushing. We will have pictures of that departure to follow in due course. Time of pic above...06.20. Needless to say, the Port didn't stay that empty for long.

New Port of Dover marker buoys boost water safetySmiley
__________________________________________

A line of new yellow markers will signpost the boundary between bathing and boating areas within the harbour this summer.

The buoys, being laid by the Port of Dover next month, will follow a border which is currently defined by a white marker on Prince of Wales Pier and a corresponding marker on the wall of the Eastern Docks.

Sailors, rowers or kayakers should only cross this line into the bathing area to reach the slipway or Dover Sea Sports Centre during the summer months.

Port of Dover Harbour Master, Paul Brown, said: "This is not about changing public access to the harbour; it’s about making the existing arrangements easier to follow.

"Local water users already know where the bathing area is. But each summer we get visitors – both swimmers and boaters – who don’t know there’s a demarcation line and who don’t read the shore signage.

"These buoys will leave them in no doubt.

"They will help us ensure that as many people as possible can enjoy the water in safety this summer."

The boundary, running parallel to the shore, will be marked by six yellow buoys with a ‘gate’ - defined by green and red lateral buoys – giving boats access to the slipway.

Dover Sea Sports Centre water users will retain their dispensation to exit the bathing area close to their building.

The markers will be in place between April 1 and October 31.

I am sorry to say that all the rubbish we see on our roads around Dover has been there month in and month out, it never gets picked up.How can you work in the D,D,C,office and live in Deal and you see it all each morning of the week.I know it is not down to the council to pick it up and it is the job of the highways dept.

But on saying that you know the right person at highways to get it done .
It is not true to say that they are doing their best ,again sorry to add but all we get is talk and talk but nothing ever gets done about it ,and it is also wrong to say it all comes from HGV a lot of it comes from your own plant within the council grounds and cars with trailors on the back without a net over the top of the rubbish.

I said is many times before when the highways do a cut back of trees etc, They should have a person going along behind them picking up the rubbish.

Just prior to the arrival of Emerald, as seen in Ed's nice picture below (post 2511)...the Nederland Reefer which had been occupying the Cargo Terminal left the berth and made way for Emeralds arrival. The Emerald had been waiting patiently offshore meandering between Deal and the White Cliffs until Nederalnd was ready to depart. Around 09.45 she was off and here are pictures of her exiting through the Western Exit bound for Hamburg. The light was blindingly bright on the water...and there was a biting wind rattling through the harbour.. me oul timbers shivered while getting the pix and the skin was whipped off me rice puddin'. Just using two shots here below..

DDC:Tackling Roadside Litter Issues
_____________________________

As we continue to work hard to keep roadsides clean on the A20 and A2 in and out of Dover, Dover District Council is calling for drivers to stop dropping litter, and for the Government to review the situation given the burden placed on local taxpayers who are currently picking up the bill.

Cleansing on the M20 in Kent, as far as the Roundhill Tunnels, is undertaken by Highways England’s contractors. However, the burden of cleansing the A20 and A2 as they come into Dover District falls to Dover District Council.

Before clear ups can take place on these and other busy roads, the Council has to organise lane closures to ensure the safety of the workforce, at considerable expense to the local taxpayer. For the A20/A2, the Council has to apply to Highways England for lane closures. The clear ups cost the Council around £2,000 a time. Due to traffic volumes, these are only ever allowed overnight, with booked slots often being lost at the last minute due to poor weather conditions or because of traffic management issues.

Despite these challenges, the Council does continue to organise regular clear ups of these major roads. For example, three nights have been booked to clean the A20 on 21-23 March, and four nights for the A2 on 4-7 April.

Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council said: "We are aware of concerns around the amount of litter dropped on the roadsides of the A20 and A2 and other major roads. We continue to work hard to address this, and are committed to maintaining a high level of service for our road users and neighbouring communities.

"By keeping our roads free of litter, we can make a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone. We therefore appeal to everyone to take responsibility and to not drop litter in the first place. Litter thrown from moving vehicles puts the safety of workers collecting it at risk of being struck by passing vehicles. We’re therefore urging drivers to keep a rubbish bag in their vehicle and take litter home.

"However, these roads are part of the vital transport infrastructure of the country, and the rubbish along these roadsides is associated with the huge volume of traffic entering and leaving the country. This is a national issue, and we would call on the Government to review the allocation of responsibilities in this matter."

For those with a passing interest in yesterdays Budget. Here is a synopsis of the main points as sent through to us
from no less a celebrity than George Osborne himself........and here we are...

Dear Paul,

Today I delivered a Budget that puts the next generation first and redoubles our efforts to make Britain fit for the future by:

• Cutting taxes so working people can keep more of the money they earn From April next year the tax free personal allowance will rise to £11,500, a tax cut for 31 million people that means a typical basic rate taxpayer will be paying over £1,000 less income tax then when we came into government. The higher rate threshold will also increase to £45,000, a tax cut of over £400.

• Freezing fuel duty to support household budgets and small firms. We have frozen fuel duty for the sixth year in a row, a saving of £75 a year to the average driver and £270 a year to a small business with a van. We’re also freezing beer and cider duty to back British pubs.

• Improving our schools so our children get the best start in life. We’re providing extra money so every school in England becomes an academy and we are going to put a new sugar levy on the soft drinks industry so they reduce the sugar content of their products to tackle childhood obesity. The money raised will be used to double sports funding in primary schools and fund longer school days in secondary schools that offer their pupils a wider range of activities, including extra sport.

• Introducing a new Lifetime ISA to help the next generation to save. We know people like the simplicity of ISAs so we’re going to increase the ISA limit from just over £15,000 to £20,000 for everyone. For those under 40, many of whom haven’t had such a good deal from pensions, we’re going to introduce a completely new Lifetime ISA. You won’t have to choose between saving for your first home, or saving for your retirement – the government is going to give you money to do both. For every £4 saved, the Government will give you £1. So put in £4,000 each year and the government will give you £1,000 every year until you’re 50.

• Cutting taxes for small businesses. 600,000 small businesses will now pay no business rates at all, an annual saving of up to almost £6,000, and a further 250,000 small businesses will get a tax cut on their business rates bill. We have also cut Capital Gains Tax to boost enterprise and cut Corporation Tax to support investment and job creation.

Yours

George Osborne
Chancellor of the Exchequer

The Bridge: A new collection of pictures from GEORGE HOLLAND

When George asked me if I wanted a collection of images from The Bridge..
I thought for a fleeting instant he may have been talking about that famed Swedish/Danish drama....but I came to my senses almost immediately and realised that the images were from ...THE BRIDGE of the DELFT SEAWAYS.
And here they are. Huge thanks George.

As you can see the ship is immaculate as are George's pictures..
We rarely see pictures like these from a bridge, so it is really great to see them.
I have more pictures like those above from George on the file now too and will use in due course.
had to select just some from the collection for instant use today.
More pictures always welcome George.

It was a biting bitterly cold day yesterday here on the Dover seafront..with an icy wind whipping in off the Russian Urals. It was almost enough to make a chap reach for his thermals! Into the teeth of this quite strong icy wind rode the Dunkerque Seaways, heading for ...well yes you guessed it..Dunkerque. She had just departed through the western exit and so we were able to get this picture showing her underneath the dramatic sky. Time of shot: yesterday morning at 08.00. As you can see nature did all the work with those fabulous light beams from on high.

The picture above shows the Calais Seaways battling the bright but rough conditions of yesterday afternoon. You can see the new livery here once more and the ship looks great...previously also shown to good effect by Jeremy Ward. More in the Search Engine.

Supporting Our Communities - Funding Advice At Local Events
__________________________________________________

Local community groups are getting specialist funding advice from major funders at advice sessions being held at the Guildhall in Sandwich on Wednesday, (16 March), and Dover Town Council offices on Thursday, (17 March).

The events are being organised by Dover District Council in partnership with Red Zebra, and hosted by Sandwich Town Council and Dover Town Council. There has been an excellent response to the events, being held in Sandwich from 1pm-7pm, and Dover from 10am-3.45pm. More than 50 one-to-one sessions have been booked, which will allow community organisations to discuss their projects direct with the funders and to obtain advice on completing their applications.

The funders attending are Big Lottery Fund, who will be talking about Awards for All small grants of up to £10k, Kent Community Foundation, Arts Council England (Sandwich only), and the Heritage Lottery Fund, (Dover only).

Red Zebra Community Solutions, formerly known as East Kent Voluntary Action Support (EKVAS) and Case Kent, provide specialist advice, information and support to develop not-for-profit organisations and groups in the area.

Cllr Keith Morris, DDC Cabinet Member for the voluntary sector said: "We are delighted to have worked with Red Zebra to organise these events, and we continue to work with all our community partners to support the great work of the voluntary sector."

Independent panel announces c. £100,000 of new awards from the Port of Dover Community Fund
_________________________________________________________________________________

An independent panel has awarded a fantastic £97,404 in Port of Dover Community Fund grants to a range of local good causes.

The money – the second tranche from a community fund provided by the Port and administered by Kent Community Foundation – will go to 13 organisations supporting local people and will enhance the town’s reputation as a great place to live, work and visit. Projects range from cultural events and arts activities, to schemes that support disabled children and help enhance residents’ skills and employment opportunities.

The awarding panel – chaired by the Bishop of Dover, The Right Reverend Trevor Willmott – met to review applications last month, and were impressed with the breadth of work going on in the local community.

Bishop Trevor said: "It is remarkable to see how much energy and enthusiasm there is to support others in our local community. We are delighted to be funding 13 more excellent projects through the Fund, and we truly believe they will enhance the social, cultural and economic landscape of Dover."

The Fund was established in 2014 to benefit the Dover community - with a particular focus on supporting projects that provide opportunities for people to develop employment skills, as well as those offering activities that enrich the social and cultural life of Dovorians.

Andrew Garrett, Head of Funds at Kent Community Foundation said: "Huge congratulations to the very worthy projects supported by the panel. The level of grants made reflect the high calibre of work going on in the area. We are confident that there will be huge benefit to local people in Dover, and look forward to seeing the Fund’s impact develop."

In total, the Port has already donated £350,000 to the Fund.

Tim Waggott, the Port’s Chief Executive, said: "We believe passionately in our town and its future – that’s why we continue to actively invest in it.

"We’re extremely grateful to the independent panel and Kent Community Foundation who’ve been working so hard to ensure the Port of Dover Community Fund is a success. More and more organisations are recognising how the Port of Dover Community Fund can help them make a genuine difference to the lives of Dovorians."

The Fund will open for applications again in May; organisations interested in applying can register their details via the Kent Community Foundation website or by emailing them at admin@kentcf.org.uk.

• The following organisations received grants from the Port of Dover Community Fund in the latest round:
- Bechange
- Blue Sky Development & Regeneration
- Cinque Ports Community Kitchen
- Cross Links
- Dover Music Festival
- East Kent Education Business Partnership Ltd
- Home-Start Dover
- Pegasus Playscheme
- Samphire
- Alkham Valley Community Project
- The Beacon Church and Christian Centre 'Footprints'
- The Big Reveal
- Up on the Downs

Well the guys tried but they just couldn't reach the water due to the ultra low low tide, and had to abandon their boat as you can see below. They eventually got going when the tide in due course filtered in. Time and Tide waits...etc etc.
I saw them by chance driving off home at 6pm last night so it looks like they still got in a full day.

A couple of pictures below here of the Solent Guardian from Friday evening...clearly returning to her base which appears to be Wellington Dock these days, as I remember Mike got a picture of the vessel previously. At a guess she was probably working out at the windfarms..

NEWS BELOW ON THE PORT OF DOVERS CHILDRENS EASTER RACE ALONG THE ESPLANADE

Enter now for the Egg-citing children’s Easter Race Eggs-travaganza along Dover’s Egg-cellent Esplanade SmileySmiley
________________________________________________________________________________________

Come and join the fun at the Port of Dover’s first Easter Mile Race along our award-winning seafront on Tuesday, March 29.
The event, which will start at 4pm, is open to all children from the ages of three to 14.

Following the success of last year’s Hallowe’en children’s race, the Port is inviting all budding athletes, keen fun runners and even toddlers to take part in the event - all sporting colourful Easter bonnets as they run a mile along the seafront.

There will be trophies for the winning girl and boy in each category, and medals for all runners, plus prizes for the best Easter bonnets. So get creative, put on your running shoes and join the party.

All money raised, through the purchase of refreshments, will go to this year’s Port of Dover Community Regatta charity, Dover Sea Cadets.

Tim Waggott, the Port of Dover’s chief executive, said: "Our children’s races have proved so popular with youngsters and their parents, we decided to extend our racing calendar with the addition of the Easter event.

"We want to see as many runners as possible wearing Easter bonnets along the seafront. We’ll be handing out awards for the fastest competitors as well as those with the best costumes."

The run will be separated into two heats – one for three to eight-year-olds (and their parents) and one for nine to 14-year-olds – with space for 40 competitors in each.

In addition to the winners’ prizes – sponsored by Dover Western Docks Revival contractors GRAHAM - every runner who finishes will get a medal and goody bag. The after-race party will feature an Easter Egg hunt, and plenty to eat and drink.

To book your space, please email ...........
alyson.hudson@doverport.co.uk or call 01304 240400.

The promenade and beach will remain open to the public for those who wish to watch the races, so come along and cheer them all on!
