Sad news to report about a vessel that featured on the forum last year. Smiley The Wave Craft Surface Effect Ship Umoe Ventus sank last month after catching fire off Langeland, while en route to Bagenkop.
Thick smoke and fire forced the four crew members aboard Umoe Ventus at the time of the accident to deploy a life raft. All four persons were later on picked up by a passing fishing boat. They were transferred to a local hospital to undergo treatment for inhaling potentially toxic fumes.
The fire had reportedly started in the engine room, subsequently spreading to the fiberglass body of the 27-meter vessel.
The vessel was reportedly adrift and burning for an hour before capsizing in the rocky shallows some 200 meters off the coast.

The sea was an angry roaring raging beast yesterday morning. The weather was awful in the morning once again...driving rain and high wind. The top pictures were taken through the rain as the sea gave the seafront a bashing. The power of the waves thump thump thumping against the promenade wall was almost shocking. It wasn't a day for sandwiches in the seafront shelter - Nosiree Bob! Who wants/needs soggy sandwiches...

And then a few hours later when the rough stuff passed over...the sun came through and it all improved greatly. Although I bet this Europa truck got its chassis soaked on the way over. That's the freight only ferry European Seaways in the distance.

Below we have the Calais Seaways chasing the Pride of Burgundy out of the Port of Dover into the open sea and across the channel - both heading for Calais.
All were delighted to see some wintery sunshine.

I have been asked by the lovely people at the tax office (HMRC) to remind everyone of the following.
I have been doing it myself this past week..

TENS OF THOUSANDS RING IN THE NEW YEAR BY SUBMITTING TAX RETURNS
________________________________________________________________

A record-breaking 24,546 people submitted their tax return online on New Year’s Eve, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has revealed.

These latest numbers represent a 2.8% rise on one year ago, while more than 11,467 people sent off their Self Assessment tax return on New Year’s Day 2016 itself.

Hundreds of people decided to spend the first hours of 2016 completing their Self Assessment, with more than 600 people submitting their tax return between midnight and 10am on New Year’s Day.

The data also show that the number of people completing their tax return on Christmas Day broke records, with 2,044 customers submitting their tax return – an increase of 13% on 25 December 2014.

On Boxing Day, 5,402 customers ignored the temptation of the sales and instead chose to find their inner peace by completing their Self Assessment online.

Ruth Owen, Director General of Personal Tax, HMRC, said:

"As we all enjoy the festive season it’s easy to see how completing your tax return can be forgotten, but the 31 January deadline will be here quicker than we think.

"Our advice is don’t leave it until it’s too late. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time and remember our online service is available with helpful advice and handy tips any time of the year, whether that’s on Christmas Day, or even New Year’s Eve."

The deadline for sending 2014-15 tax returns to HMRC, and paying any tax owed, is 31 January 2016.

ENDS

There you have it. PB.

Gosh Bill, its hard to say what went wrong.
This is the way to do it.
Just press the 'add photo' on your posting box and select the pic you want ....
then press open
then press upload
when you get Image 1
transfer Image 1 complete with brackets into the main box
...and that's all there is to it. All should work then.

Have another try.

Another shot here of the tranquil scene in the Port of Dover yesterday..
Will have some of todays rough tough pictures tomorrow morning but for now...the tranquillity...
The picture above follows on from the shot in the recent post below...just a stroll across the road and the scene changes thus.

Thanks Jan..yes indeed ..'fairly choppy' might be described as an understatement.
I was holding on to my equilibrium and I was on dry land..Smiley

But more pictures on that tomorrow, all being equal..

Gosh yes back to wind and rain, so no walk along the seafront today, and one imagines a crossing today will be fairly choppy.
Love this mornings pictures and Mr Fox had the right idea enjoying sun while he could. Smiley

Good grief! we are back in horrendous weather mode again this morning...
fierce wind and rain bashing us here at the Port of Dover.
But bizarrely.. yesterday it was gorgeously warm and springlike. What's happening?
Here are some pictures from yesterday showing almost a different Dover
The top shot shows the Marina yesterday morning. The sunlight was very dramatic against black skies at about 09.45. The sharp and powerful warm light streaked across the Port and the Marina and made all look striking. Hopefully that picture above captures it... had numerous other pictures but ran with that one.

Okay..we have gone mad on foxes here. But yesterdays fab weather brought this guy out of the deep deep jungle! He rested in the sun overlooking the harbour, watching the ships, absorbing the warm glows, stretching, yawning, scratching...all the things the rest of us do. My equipment isn't really up to the job of wildlife photography but I had a go... That's not the first time I have ben told that my equipment isn't up to the job!! But I'm saying no more...
Smiley
Here are foxes below from a previous time in the exact same spot.I cant resist.

As dusk fell last evening yours truly spotted smoke rising from the Emmaus Charity Centre...there we are, but hopefully all was well. I got concerned for a while...but haven't heard anything further.

Interesting query on moving the clock tower, Howard. The old victorian water tower at St Pancras station had to be moved a decade ago to make way for Eurostar station construction. The chosen solution was to slice it in to three wedding cake sections and move each cake slice and then re-assemble the slices. Mind you, it does look expensive. More for anyone that's interested if you google IHBC and St Pancras. Note the very big and very expensive toys needed for the heavy lifting and transportation....

And whilst I'm on, can anyone confirm whether the Admiralty Pier is only open to anglers these days given that POW is closed ? I remember a few years ago paying an angling warden 50p or so for access, which was reasonable, but I don't know what arrangements apply now.

They don't respond to individuals Mike much preferring their spin doctors to issue edicts from on high. As for the listed status of the clock tower and the boat house DHB pay little heed to such niceties. Would love to know how they plan to move it.

Howard -

I've heard that the swingbridge carpark is to be the site of site offices etc.

As to the clocktower [& the building in front of it, the original lifeboat house, which I hope is also 'listed'] you should ask DHB.

I've seen nothing about the buildings in the vague & wooly information put out by DHB [but I might have missed something in the snowstorm of releases during their recent Charm Offensive].

Melancholy Photos from Mike, 2 questions.

a) Why is the swingbridge car park closed?
b) What happens to the clock tower, we were told many years ago that it would be "moved"?

Closure of the Prince of Wales Pier - the end of an era.

A gate will soon be installed in place of the temporary security fencing & the swingbridge carpark has been closed.

It is good to read that despite the permanent closure of the Prince of Wales pier to the public that there will still be the annual wreath-scattering from the end of the pier in memory of those lost in the HERALD OF FREE ENTERPRISE disaster on 6th.March, with the party escorted by DHB staff.

Lets hope that this sad tradition will continue each year from the same spot.

The Italia Reefer left us yesterday morning...bound for Hamburg in Germany. But just as soon as she came into view we suffered one of our many torrential downpours, which we endured all day yesterday. The pictures below aren't very good - they are more watercolour than photograph, as the deluge gave us all a good kicking. The camera was soaked, the photographer was soaked, and the images went a slightly odd colour...gawd knows? But here we are anyway... retrieved partially from the rain soaked abyss by the computer...

Shame too as she left through the western exit which is normally good for nice photograph or two.
See also Ed's picture in post 2253.

Extraordinary levels of rain are falling...it is literally powering earthwards here in Dover, bashing the roofs with considerable force and causing flooding in local areas. But it is also very warm. The BBC are reporting that allsorts of flowers are blooming in gardens in London and with the ever favourite daffodils shooting up and blooming in London and elsewhere. What to make of it? ...and here the rain comes down again as I write....scything into the window panes and rattling the roof. The warm weather and the levels of rain are directly linked it seems. PB.

Gosh it was a miserable oul day yesterday and no mistake. The picture of Dover Seafront above looks gloomy but it was actually worse in reality - I had to brighten it up a bit for fear of causing widespread depression. Where once we got snow and frost, now we get wind and rain non stop...by the bucketloads if you see what I mean. Its like the eternal rain/wind in Blade Runner.
That's my last picture above of people on the Prince of Wales Pier because as Mike said we believe it to be closed for good now. However yours truly is looking forward now - it will be an interesting and possibly exciting future watching the huge new development plans come to fruition.

Ah thanks Sarah - you are a star yourself for sureSmileySmiley

Well done Ed getting that shot of the Italia Reefer, didn't see it this time myself so you saved the day.Smiley

You are dead right Howard re empty docks...all rushed home from France and beyond to prepare for the new working year. Normality will resume soon I'm certain.

Thanks for that Mike as ever. PB.
