As expected the Prince of Wales was closed permanently this morning & access is barriered-off.
Sad but inevitable.

Filthy day today, may try for some pix on Tuesday if no one else comes up with any.

Weather just as bad on Sunday, did anyone go for a final stroll ?
Meself & a few others chickened out due to the horizontal rain.

Not surprised to see the desolate scene on Sunday, most who had been way on a continental break would have been back by the Saturday in time to load the washing machine and get themselves and offspring ready for today's return to work and school.

Earlier in the day yesterday, before the weather all went to hell in a handcart...the Dover Lifeboat set out. Time was about 09.30 and as you can see in the background the sea was already rough. The Lifeboat is still within the harbour at this point but making its way towards the eastern exit. After leaving harbour it headed down along the blustery coast towards Deal - not sure if it was out on a shout or just in the equally vital training mode. That's one for SH.

The weather was awful as mentioned, everything being slate grey windy and wet. But before the mighty wind got going we managed to get these couple of pix below. The pictures below are a bit forced because of the ultra grey conditions and the rain..the Pride of Kent in both pictures...and Stanley the Seagull!

MAN PHOTOGRAPHING THE RAGING SURF: It was an horrendous day down here on Dover Seafront yesterday. The winds were ever so strong.. twas enough to make yer timbers creak in all the wrong places. But some parts of the day were almost hospitable...this chap above braved all to get some pictures of the raging surf while yours truly cowered backwards to a subsidiary rear window.
Smiley Although this wasn't a named storm, as is the norm recently, the winds I'm sure were even worse. Although we have some waves on show here, the real power got going when the tide was higher and the waves burst over the sea wall bigtime. Unfortunately that part of the day was dark..too dark for pictures.

Extra pic of Tug Doughty below from a few days back, lets not forget the efforts of all out there on days like this...keeping the super busy Port going in fine style. Some people on Twitter seem to forget that nature plays a huge part when services suffer some delays.

Huge thanks for that picture below Ed and best wishes to your brother in law.
I am sure the information provided by yourself and Mike will have helped Bill down there in Austins Ferry.
Don't talk about seasickness Vic I am still attending rehab after the Princess Maud!!

Re Bill's request & Ed's most interesting 'on board' view of the HALLADALE I was hoping to put up a couple of pix from the 'Dover Ferry Photos' forum [with permission of course !].

Unfortunately my usual techniques for nicking photos from websites has failed on this occasion.

Bill - suggest that you go to this link & add 'http' -

You will find many photos & a full history of the ship

Re the request from Bill Johnson in post #2242:

The converted Royal Navy frigate which you would have sailed on in the fifties was the Townsend Brothers ferry Halladale. Loads of info on the website below:

www.doverferryphotosforums.co.uk/ts-halladale-past-and-present/

Here is a photo which you will not see elsewhere as it depicts my late father-in-law on the focsle of the Halladale from my brother-in-law's private collection.

PICTURES FROM JANUARY ONE - ONCE AGAIN A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.
You might need sunglasses once again to view the picture above. Looking through the lens at the sun directly left yours truly bedazzled and bewildered for a while...walking into doors, walls, and the occasional Palladian column ..Smiley

The picture above shows the scene yesterday morning just as the sun rose and came into view above Cap Gris Nez...it shows us the early ferry making its way to Calais and you can even see the aerials/monuments on the hilltops there. The weather is fluctuating wildly at the moment...running the full gauntlet from tranquil dramatic sunrises and fierce raging wind to torrential rain. Its a bit of a rough ol' day again today.

A couple of hours later at around 10.00am this guy below was spotted moving down the channel. Made for quite a sight. We understand it to be the MPI ENTERPRISE bound for Liverpool. A fairly clear shot was possible.

"
Vessel MPI ENTERPRISE (IMO: 9578244, MMSI: 244770722) is an offshore support vessel buit in 2011 and currently sailing under the flag of Netherlands. MPI ENTERPRISE has 121m length overall and beam of 40m. Her gross tonnage is 11730 tons.

"

ALSO just to mention again..

If anyone can help with BIll's request which of course has come all the way from sunny Australia, please let us know.

Thanks for that Bill. Interesting post. Unfortunately I myself don't have any of the pictures you ask for but hopefully one of the guys will...or a general reader looking in might have a pic or two. If so they can either post themselves, no membership required, or send anything directly to me PaulB on dover7@msn.com. Hopefully a pic or two will turn up so that you can show your grandkids.

Cheers Bill J

Slightly off our 'Marine' coverage - excellent set of photos of the Shakespeare Beach repair work on Nigel Scutt’s ‘Dover Marina’ Facebook page.

The section of track between Dover & Calais is said to be one of the most expensive lengths to maintain in the whole of the UK, although the major trouble in the past has been at the Folkestone Warren end, with unstable ground.

I’m sure that Network Rail would like to close it, given half a chance.

Happy New Year !
