My visits to Dover have sadly, been few this year and I have relied on the great coverage supplied by Paul and the Team to keep abreast of so much that has been going on. It was therefore a great pleasure to be sitting on the cliffs at Langdon on Sunday afternoon watching, in glorious sunlight the DISNEY MAGIC sail past as she departed through the Eastern Entrance this being an added bonus and soon to be followed by the DEEP HELDER.

Time to end the migrant crisis...says Charlie Elphicke MP for Dover and Deal

Dear Mr Boland,

Migrants continue to try to break into Britain by crossing the Channel in small boats. Attempts are becoming ever more risky – with a large group of around 50 detained last week having arrived in flimsy canoes.

Tragically, the weekend also saw the first incident in which a person may have lost their life trying to make this dangerous crossing. A woman is reported to have fallen from a dinghy seen heading towards the French coast by a cargo vessel on Friday. A major search operation was stood down on Saturday night.

This shocking incident has long been my worst fear. My thoughts and prayers go out to the woman and her family – as well as sincere hopes that she might yet be found.

These dangerous crossings have got to stop. The people traffickers don’t care a jot for people’s safety. Over the winter we heard of toddlers being crammed into unseaworthy vessels, which then crossed the Channel in the most appalling weather conditions.

The only way to bring the migrant crisis to an end is for traffickers and migrants alike to know the crossings won't succeed. That means 24/7 surveillance of the French coast – including investment in the long-range thermal imaging cameras used elsewhere in the world – so that any boats are spotted, intercepted and returned safely back to France.

Because as we have seen so many times over the years in Dover and Deal, anything other than strong action only encourages this activity. We will never forget the horrors of the Calais Jungle – a desolate place where thousands of vulnerable people lived in absolute squalor.

We got rid of it with tough action. We fought to convince the French to step up enforcement. By the end of 2016 the camp was dismantled – and things now are much improved. Yet a soft approach let the French port town become a migrant magnet. We must never allow it to happen again.

And it was our efforts that got people to stand up and take notice of the recent crisis. We invited numerous ministers down to Dover. Border Force cutters were ordered to return from the Mediterranean. A meeting was held with top officials in France where a joint agreement was struck, which included sending unsuccessful asylum seekers back to France.

Yet there is so much more that could and should be done. We need to send more of the unsuccessful asylum seekers back to France. We need to make the English Channel a joint UK/France security zone, so our boats can intercept smugglers wherever they are found. That’s why the Home Office must now get a grip on this crisis.

We must send out a stronger message. People on the other side of this debate claim to have these people’s safety in mind. Yet their plans would simply encourage more dangerous crossings to be made, putting more lives at risk.

One tragedy in the Channel is one too many. Firm action is needed now to prevent any more.

Charlie Elphicke MP

Many thanks to Charlie for the above...

There certainly has been hugely increased activity.
The pictures below show a flurry of presumably related activity on Dover Beach late last week...just double checking..Thursday in fact. It shows the Border Force out in ..well force.. as they retrieve two boats from the water...looked on by the crew of the Dover Harbour Patrol Boat. Presumably all dealing with another migrant situation. I haven't been able to find out much about it as there is so much migrant activity now that it hardly gets reported anymore. We certainly don't want to see people losing their lives making the crossing.
Anyway...here we are with the pictures below, make of it what you will...

SmileyMany thanks Harald for the post below. A nice collection of pictures there. Fresh and enjoyable. Good to hear from you again. Hope you enjoyed your visit over to Dover.

Last Thursday as we were on holiday in Kent we went to the St Martin's Battery car park. The view over the Port of Dover was very beautiful.
We had not expected the HMS Pickle to arrive in Dover so we were surprised to hear him shooting as we saw him arrive.
You can see the HMS Pickle behind the right crane.

A closer shot of the AIDAbella.

And a view over the whole Port of Dover.

HMS PICKLE

That's the last of yours truly's current batch of HMS Pickle above there. The picture shows Pickle earlier in the sequence and a fair way off .. as she comes along parallel to the coast as it were, before changing course for the Port here at Dover.

Yesterday both the Spirit of Discovery and Pacific Princess were in Port...here they are below early morning under a menacing sky...shiver me timbers..

Two exciting cruise ships in Port today...Amera...I don't think off top of head ...that we've had this one before...and also in Port, the extra special Disney Magic, loved by kids of all ages. Alas as I write its raining and grim, so some of said magic is dispersed.

Update re Amera: have just heard from 'a reliable source' that the now white Amera was formerly the black hulled Prinsendam which visited here many times in the past....so there we are. Many thanks.

Some more shots now of HMS Pickle arriving at the Port of Dover on Thursday afternoon...
with all guns a-blazin'

HMS Pickle arriving in Port above and firing off a few rounds as she enters below...

You can see the smoke from the blazing guns there and the crew working hard...the resounding thud from the gun took a long time to reach the 'observation tower'... you would expect a time lapse but twas much longer than expected...fascinating. You can just see the chap in the yellow jacket above there with his hands over his ears waiting for the next ..BANG! Very enjoyable photographing HMS Pickle and quite a challenge getting it right.

A few minutes before the Pickle arrival...the Med Surveyor left the Port
and here she is.......

....type the name in the Search Engine to see the previous Med Surveyor pictures too...

Well done Mike. Interesting pictures and info below. Great stuff!Smiley

A few more PICKLES - shortly after arrival Thursday evening & from the pontoons Friday morning.

No signs of life aboard at 0730 so unable to find their ETD & next port.

An unusual sight in the Granville Dock for a few days has been the Border Agency’s SPEEDWELL on the boat hoist berth awaiting a lift-out.

The boat hoist is currently under annual overhaul so maybe she’ll be there for a few days more.

DEEP HELDER [post 6454] came in mid-afternoon Friday & was still berthed on the Eastern Arm at 0030.

Excellent pix of the departure of MED SURVEYOR on the ’Dover Straits Shipping’ Facebook page.
She’s currently off the Dutch coast.

Interesting news for Dovorians who live within earshot of the Eastern Docks foghorns - they have been removed !
I certainly won’t miss the one that gave an irritating high-pitched electronic bleep every ten seconds.
More details on Notice to Mariners 38/19 on the DHB website.

Some pictures above there of dredger Reimerswaal. We have featured Reimers before if you look in our search engine above you can see previous pix. She came in very close to shore earlier this week...presumably to let the 'captive' pilot off ...the pilot no doubt held up by the wild wild weather earlier on..

Below we have AIDAbella tranquilly arriving yesterday morning (Thursday)....

AIDAbella - on a 14 day round trip from Kiel in Germany of essentially the British isles...

The huge crane platform Saipem 7000 was offshore a few days ago. There it was...massive and semi static in front of yours truly but for some reason I couldn't get a sharp picture. I blame the camera...
it has to be the equipment..SmileySmiley

Nice collection below MikeSmiley I understand the frustration but I have some shots of Med Surveyor and also more of HMS Pickle in the pipeline...still sorting...

Thanks Brian Smiley

A frustrating afternoon which started when I went up Citadel Road to see whether HMS PICKLE was coming up to Dover under sail.

She wasn’t & I was about to drive down to the Ad.Pier when I saw to my horror the MED SURVEYOR coming off her berth & heading for Western & was only able to get a few unsatisfactory pix of this most interesting vessel,.
I hope that Paul or Patrick have better views.

Down on the Ad.Pier on the Turret [as usual the outer end of the pier was closed as a cruise ship was on Cruise-2] I got a few views of PICKLE’s arrival - her only sail set was the jib.

However as Paul’s nice pix show she was hoisting more sails as she entered & this must have explained the long wait as she hid behind the AIDABELLA before there was the thud of her cannons going off.
Frustrating not being able to see anything !

Eventually she appeared from behind the AIDA & headed down to the Tidal Basin & berthed astern of the lifeboat, all tied up by the time I got down there.

Nice underway pix of ANNA’s arrival from Paul.

The magnificent monster cruise ship Celebrity Reflection was in with us again yesterday. A huge beast as you can see in the pictures above and very impressive. Pictures were taken early morning and show the ship at Cruise Terminal Two. In pic 2 you can see Border Force in the distance...BF vessels trying hard to keep abreast of the ever increasing influx. The Celebrity Reflection was/is on a 12 day round trip of the British Isles from Amsterdam.... the weather wasn't too good for her yesterday, she left at 7pm approx. in the rain. Pictures taken at that time were soft and grey...not much use to man or beast.

Following along from Mike's nice shots in the post below of ANNA TX37 Smiley
here she is arriving earlier the same day (Tuesday) and looking good.

On Tuesday the rather nice Dutch schooner ANNA TX37 came into Dover from Cherbourg & sailed at dawn on Wednesday for Nieuwpoort, Belgian.

Built in 1931 as the f/v ANTHONIE she still carries her Texel fishing registration number.
She fished until 1977 & in the 1980s was converted to a gaff-rigged schooner for charter work.
An attractive vessel that would look much better under sail !

A number of surplus Dutch motor f/vs have been converted to sail & elderly coasters converted to angling boats.

Sorry ‘bout chopping off the tops of her masts - with the sun over my shoulder the damn screen on my pocket cameras was almost unreadable !

Wednesday morning found four vessels on the Admiralty Pier, the ANDROS was bunkering DEEP HELDER & MED SURVEYOR was alongside Cruise-1.

Something large & rather ugly [IMHO of course] was on Cruise-2.

No sign of HMS PICKLE heading for Dover yet, she seems firmly planted in Eastbourne.

The Latest from P&O Ferries...

TWO DOVER & DEAL SEA CADETS GRANTED P&O FERRIES BURSARY AT ANNUAL AWARDS NIGHT
____________________________________________________________________________________

Local ferry operator P&O Ferries continued its support of the Dover & Deal Sea Cadets by presenting bursaries to two lucky recipients at the charity’s Annual Awards Night, which took place recently in Dover Town Hall.

Now in its eighth year, and with over 200 attendees, the evening celebrated and acknowledged the successes of Team Lynx’s Junior Sea Cadets and Cadets, in respect of their 2018/19 Unit Review.

The P&O Ferries bursary awards were as follows:
• 2019 Cadet of the Year, won by Petty Officer Nathan Clark. Remarkably, the 17 year old is also the youngest volunteer crewman at Dover RNLI.
• 2019 Most Improved Cadet, won by Cadet James McCann, aged 13.
These well deserved awards were presented by Noelle Downer, Lifeboat Press Officer at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

These awards also encompass a monetary benefit of £275 to each winner, which will cover a week’s offshore training within one of three Sea Cadet sailing brigs, where they can participate in learning new skills.

Alongside the excitement of these accomplishments, highlights from the evening included a performance from the Dover & Deal Sea Cadets band, with both music and marching, alongside a film screening showcasing the Cadets activities in 2018/19.

The event also saw an emotional farewell from Commanding Officer Sarah Butler, who is moving to a district posting after 25 years of service. She stated, "I’m very proud of every single cadet and the volunteer staff who have made Team Lynx the community unit it has become over the last years. I would especially like to thank P&O Ferries for their generous bursary awards again this year".

Currently the Sea Cadets has 35 Cadets in each unit and is continually welcoming more young people who are keen to participate: to learn skills, explore new territories, meet people and enrich themselves with differing perspectives. The ethos of this initiative directly aligns with P&O Ferries’ drive to support young people’s development within vocational roles and to give a platform for their future successes.

After looking in at Ramsgate on Saturday morning [post 6452] I took a look at Margate Roads to see what was sheltering there.
Amongst a few coasters were some interesting craft.

Anchored well offshore were the work barge NP 459 of Neptune Marine Services & Boskalis’s big pipelaying barge BOKA CONSTRUCTOR.

Remember Boskalis ? Much involved with DWDR dredging & infilling works & I’m sure that we’ll see them again when the next stage of infilling is needed & we wave goodbye to the Tidal Basin, Granville Dock & the Wick.

Both barges have now returned to the London Array windfarm area.

A little closer inshore were the tug DUTCH PEARL, THV PATRICIA & the multi-purpose repair vessel DEEP HELDER who may be coming into Dover soon.

The AFON LLIGWY came into Dover about breakfast-time Monday but didn’t stay long, sailing for Plymouth about 1830.

I hear that HMS PICKLE [posts 2427/4846 etc] is expected in Dover on Wednesday, she’s currently south of Selsey Bill & heading this way.
Not to be missed !

DFDS rolls out red carpet ‘FIP’ treatment for summer ferry travel

__________________________________________________________

Ferry Passengers are being given the opportunity to create their virtual passenger when they book passage online with award-winning ferry operator DFDS, from the UK over the coming weeks.

The innovative approach, FIP (Ferry Important Passenger) enables them to select an avatar with similar characteristics and travel needs and in a few clicks they quickly and simply tailor a range of free perks that best suit them.

Offers include kids eat free and pets go free for travel from Newcastle or Dover as well as free cabin upgrade or free breakfast on the Newcastle-Amsterdam route and free Premium Lounge or priority loading on Dover-Calais or Dunkirk routes.

Stephen House, Senior Campaign Manager at DFDS said: "This is about tailoring the right services and, as FIP implies, delivering a red carpet treatment to fit the passenger or group, to help them make the most of the excellent facilities that DFDS can offer.

It also creates a more emotive booking interface and experience, relevant to the particular traveller. Passenger A might be a young guy, who likes his food and drink, travelling on to a trendy destination. Passenger B might be a middle-aged family man travelling with his family and their dog, heading to different type of destination.

Thanks to FIP, both will receive relevant and quite different offer suggestions and with the information we gather contribute to bespoke deals in the future, whether passengers are planning a short stay close to the port or travelling onward to the myriad of European destinations.

The FIP campaign will run from 7 August - 2 September and continues a DFDS tradition to deliver peak summer travel campaigns focused on our great additional services."

*Book by 2nd September and travel by 30th September for Dover-France crossings and travel by 30th December for Newcastle-Amsterdam crossings

DFDS to Sponsor new one-of-a-kind 10K Run in Temple Ewell, Dover
____________________________________________________________

Award-winning ferry operator DFDS have agreed to sponsor the brand new Temple Ewell 10K Run which is to take place on the 13th October 2019.

This is a new race, to start by the race HQ in Kearsney Abbey and finish in nearby Russell Gardens, taking a picturesque figure of eight course on the Kent downlands around Temple Ewell and Ewell Minnis. It is a multi-terrain course, run on a combination of track, trail and quiet lanes. It is currently the only running event to take place in the Dover area.

The race is aiming for 300 entrants and in addition to medals for all finishers, there will be prizes for the first 3 male/female plus first in age group categories (V40, V50, V60 and V70 male; V35, V45, V55 and V65 female). There will also be free photographic downloads. The race will have a race license from UK Athletics and will have medical support from the Margate Ambulance Service and on course water stations. Invicta East Kent Athletic Club are supporting the event with logistical support and loan of equipment.

The race will raise money for PTFA association for Temple Ewell School and entries are available online via the event website www.templeewell10k.co.uk .

The minimum age for entrants is 15 and the cost is £14.00 for club affiliated runners and £16.00 for non-affiliated runners.

The event is being promoted to attract runners from the whole of East Kent and participants of all standards are welcome. DFDS as part of their sponsorship will be entering a team of runners.

Race Director, Glenn Mousley has said "The opportunity to put on a race in the Dover area was compelling and with careful planning we have managed to find an interesting route that does not cross any roads. We are sure it is going to be popular, so potential entrants should register in good time to ensure a place".

Angela Matthews, Head Teacher of Temple Ewell CofE Primary school said: "The funds raised by our amazing PTFA each year are fundamental in providing vital resources for all our pupils. All schools have been affected by budget cuts in recent years, but as a small school Temple Ewell feels this even more. Without the extra funds raised, our children would miss out on vital IT equipment, enrichment opportunities and playground equipment, as well as the many other resources the PTFA pay for. We are extremely grateful to our PTFA for all their hard work in organising and running such fantastic events as the 10K run and appreciate all support they receive from the wider community".

Naomi Harper, PR Manager at DFDS said "To be involved with this new race initiative is really exciting. The course really is one of a kind, with some beautiful scenery – and challenging hills along the way! And to be able to support a local school’s fundraising activity is a natural partnership with DFDS’s new company CSR strategy. We hope to be a partner for many years to come".

-Ends-

The strange barrel/spiral cloud above was seen on the Dover Straits just immediately prior to the recent gales. A forewarn physical omen.... note the might of the thing in comparison to the ferry.
