Some pictures above there of the magnificent AIDAsol leaving us on Tuesday evening. The time was 8pm precisely, so it was getting quite dark as she moved away...en route to Amsterdam and beyond. See also post 3664.

Earlier in the day you can see her as a backdrop in the pic below to the busy DWDR work in the foreground. Dredger MP40 doing the business with Smit Stour moving back and forth surveying. The dredger was loading up one of the Wadden vessels. The harbour was a blaze of fantastic light all through the night last night with three dredgers all in a blaze of searchlights, spotlights, red lights and whathaveyou. Exciting!

Have some pictures of the crew changing, must fetch them out, as its 24 hours a day working. The dredgers never sleep.

And speaking of Dredgers etc... Patrick Simmons captured two of them here Sospan Dau and Causeway as he photographed the arrival of the Saga Sapphire in the early morning light on tuesday. Well done Patrick - nice shot below there.

You were busy Mike below - some interesting captures and info there. Well done all round.Smiley

During Wednesday afternoon the smart Bahamas-flagged coaster FLUVIUS AXE entered Dover from Dinteloord in Holland & moored on Cruise-1 where a couple of large mobile cranes were waiting for her.

I understand that she was carrying piles for the DWDR project & that pile-driving will be starting in May.
This will inevitably be noisy & will go on for some considerable time, but will be restricted, as far as possible, to daylight hours.

There’s a vast amount of information about the DWDR project on the internet but it takes some finding & then there’s a helluva lot to wade thru - very handy for hiding controversial items !

The FLUVIUS AXE was built in 1998 as the Irish ARKLOW SEA - Arklow Shipping’s green-hulled coasters that we have seen in Dover from time to time, usually loading grain.

Nice morning light for the entry of the COTE DES FLANDRES & the SOSPAN DAU as they entered on Wednesday.

[The MP40 was working with WADDEN 4 to the east of the Prince of Wales pier & the CAUSEWAY was dredging up & down the Prince of Wales & with the SOSPAN DAU has been doing so all day.

Welsh-speakers amongst ‘Sea News’ readers will recognise the rather odd name of SOSPAN DAU as ‘TWO SAUCEPANS’ or ‘SAUCEPAN TWO’

The story I heard [which must be true, it was on the internet] was that the original SOSPAN was a dredger owned by a South Wales company who started off as a metal-refining & product manufacturing company who expanded into all sorts of other businesses, including dredging & named one of their dredgers after one of their products.
The SOSPAN was eventually bought by as Dutch company who retained the original name & when they replaced the ship they re-used the old name & added TWO to it.

Well done Vic - glad you enjoyed the walk today and enjoyed seeing all the work going on. There we are above with an extra picture for you to enjoy. Hopefully its clear enough...yours truly is having a problem with his picture program behind the scenes, nothing to do with the website which is all running well, but one of those cases where I fiddled with a program and made something of a dogs dinner of it... so, like they say...
...if it aint broke don't fix it!! Smiley

Will mend eventually...
that's an unusual angle on the lifeboat there.

The Port is very busy these days...apart from all the comings and goings DWDR wise, we had two cruise liners yesterday and here they are below...

Above there we see the return of the Saga Sapphire, hugely welcome as ever...and as she enters Port you can see the magnificent AIDAsol approaching in the distance. Time of arrival in the golden light was around 0700 for the Sapphire and about 20 minutes later the AiDA was with us and here she is below.... see also post 3664 for more info.

Just adding an extra little pic here taken from an easterly wind whipped seafront promenade Easter Monday on the little camera. It shows Causeway on her way back to the Exclusion Zone having deposited another load out at sea in the designated area.

Well can you believe it...anther General Election. One is worn out trolling back and forth to the polling booth these days, and particularly so as the elections never seem to go my way... SmileySmiley

After spending years writing about politics it's a blessed relief not to have to do it anymore, however we cant always escape. I had this communique yesterday from the seat of power, so although we don't do political debate on the Sea News pages, we can at least read it. Just to say yours truly isn't endorsing anything either way..

Dear Paul,

The Prime Minister has just announced that a General Election will be held on 8 June - and that we will shortly take the necessary steps in Parliament to ensure that this can happen.

* We need this election now to secure the strong and stable leadership the country needs to see us through Brexit and beyond.
* Every vote cast for Theresa May and the Conservatives will strengthen Britain’s hand in the Brexit negotiations.
* We will stick to our Plan for a Stronger Britain and take the right long-term decisions for a more secure future.
*The choice is between strong and stable leadership in the national interest with Theresa May and the Conservatives – or weak and unstable coalition government led by Jeremy Corbyn.

We need an election because:

It will strengthen the Prime Minister’s negotiating hand in Europe. Division in Westminster, and the Government’s small majority, risks weakening your Government’s hand in its negotiations with Europe.

It is the only way to ensure we have strong leadership, certainty and stability. An election now will give the country stability and certainty for a full five years, not just up to the point at which we leave the European Union but beyond it too.

And we do need an election now:

We have a one-off chance to hold an election while the European Union agrees its negotiating position and before the detailed talks begin. This decision cannot be delayed and needs to happen now. That is the only way to end the uncertainty the other parties are causing.

If we don’t have an election, we will have uncertainty and instability. The negotiations will reach their most difficult stage in the run-up to the next scheduled General Election. Division in Westminster will risk our ability to make a success of Brexit and cause uncertainty and instability.

We have the right plan for negotiating with Europe. The Government will negotiate a deep and special partnership between a strong and successful European Union and a United Kingdom that is free to chart its own way in the world. That means we will regain control of our own money, our own laws, and our own borders – and we will be free to strike trade deals with old friends and new partners all around the world. The result will be a more secure future for our country and a better deal for you.

But our plan is opposed by the other parties. The country is coming together, but Westminster is still divided. In recent weeks, Labour have threatened to vote against the final agreement we reach with the European Union. The Liberal Democrats have said they want to "grind" the business of government "to a standstill". The Scottish National Party say they will vote against the legislation that formally repeals Britain’s membership of the European Union. And unelected members of the House of Lords have vowed to fight us every step of the way. All the other parties are doing is playing political games and causing uncertainty about the future.

We will stick to our Plan for a Stronger Britain. Only Theresa May has the plan and the proven leadership to deliver the right deal for Britain abroad and a better deal for ordinary, working people here at home.

We will stick to our Plan for a Stronger Britain and:

Establish Britain as the strongest country in Europe, in economic growth and national security. We will negotiate a deep and special partnership with our European neighbours. We will strike export deals for British goods and services. And we will lead the world in preventing terrorism and fighting modern slavery.

Build a stronger economy that rewards people who work hard and creates secure and well-paid jobs. We will make sure there is growth and prosperity around the whole country.

Provide real opportunity for all. We will give everyone a chance to get on in life, by building enough affordable housing and making sure there is a good school place for every child.

Build a more secure and united nation by taking action against the extremists who try to divide our society and standing up to the separatists who want to break up our country.
But we will also take the right long-term decisions for a more secure future. We will build on the good work we have done and stick to our Plan for a Stronger Britain. But, from the productivity of our economy to the need for a world-class system of social care, we will tackle head-on the long-term challenges we face as a country.

Theresa May is a strong leader who puts the national interest first and gets things done. When she became Prime Minister after the referendum, the priority was to provide economic certainty, a clear vision and strong leadership – and that’s what she delivered. She has also delivered on the mandate from the referendum, and begun the process through which Britain will leave the EU. Now she needs your support to lead Britain through the next five years and give the country the certainty and stability we all need.

You can only get the strong leadership the country needs by voting for Theresa May and your local Conservative candidate. A vote for any other party risks Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister, propped up in coalition by Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP, and the Liberal Democrats who just want to re-open the divisions of the referendum.

The choice facing the country at this election is all about leadership. The choice in this election is strong and stable leadership in the national interest with Theresa May and the Conservatives – or weak and unstable coalition government, led by Jeremy Corbyn.

Patrick McLoughlin
Chairman of the Conservative Party.

Really good to hear you were out and about today Vic and managed to have a walk along the seafront and also get down to the Lifeboat Station. It was a bit bracing earlier on but it picked up, so hopefully you enjoyed it all...I feel sure you will see all the developments completed...its going to be an exciting time.

Here's a pic from your fighting fit days when you were teaching kids at the youth centre.

Will have pictures of the cruise liners in the morning just working on them now...and we will have ongoing work pictures as ever. Lots to come...

As I mentioned yesterday..at 07.30 on Easter Monday it didn't look very promising for picnicking on the White Cliffs of Dover, and there in the picture above you can see the reason why. Gloom and doom. However, miracle of miracles it did improve and many people ventured forth along the seafront when the sun came through later in the day, many to enjoy all the fascinating dredging...there was a bit of a chilly oul north easterly though...both kiosks were open but the demand for ice cream was low.

A week or so ago Ed got a picture of Blue Clipper, near Dunkerque if I remember rightly ( 3620 ), and here she is going the other direction in the late sun yesterday evening, she was heading south and being chased along by the Vancouver Express, picture is very long range though.

Interesting pic Patrick below..well done with that one.Smiley PaulB.

PS: Cruise Liners arriving as per Colette's post below 3664.

An extra pic below from a day earlier...
Its murky and damp as I write this Easter Monday morning...not looking promising for clifftop picnickers..

Thanks for the Cruise List below Colette....I now know where I am for the coming week.
On the cargo front...Lombok Strait was in with us yesterday...the cargo trade still powering on.

CRUISE VISITS

Happy Easter to One and All!

Yet another brilliant week on Sea News, I'm running out of superlatives, Well Done Guys! Smiley

Here we go, Double Bubble on Tuesday 18th April, for the first time this year we have our old friend AIDAsol on her way from Las Palmas to Hamburg. She will cruise into CT2 at 08.00 departing 20.00 hours PoC.

Also a first in 2017, the return of Saga Sapphire on the Trail of the Vikings. Its a 10 night cruise from Dover to the Baltic. She will be at CT1 arriving 08.00, departing 16.00 hours T/R.

Then on Saturday 22nd April, again the first visit this season, since we last saw her in October 2016, is the grand old dame herself, Balmoral. She will be at CT2, 18.30 to Embark only. She leaves 23.00 hours to continue on her way to Hamburg and Amsterdam. This is on our schedule so hopefully we will see her that evening Smiley

The following day Sunday April 23rd, once again two friendly souls pay us a visit. The AIDAdiva, first time this year, will arrive at CT1 at 07.00 hours, PoC. She is on her way to Warnemunde, Germany, having had her 13 night one-way cruise from Las Palmas, she departs at 18.30 hours.

Her sister ship the AIDAsol is back with us again to say Hi on her way to Hamburg, CT2 09.30 departing 21.30 PoC.

Wow! Girl Biker Power at it's Best, MrB! Smiley

EASTER SUNDAY.
That's a picture above there from 2012...it was used back then across the forums to acknowledge Easter Day...

And now one from yesterday morning early. These marvellously cold but cool lady bikers were having their picture taken at the seafront shop/café/loo and yours truly snuck an extra picture across the photographers head. As a two wheel aficionado myself it was great to appreciate the females and their machinery. Amazonia lives!

That's a nice collection of shots below of the new Lifeboat at Whitstable Sarah. Well done with those and with the pilot boat. Great to see. All should have an extra look though and notice in the background on picture two in Sarah's post...the following...

Yes indeed one of Sarah's former pictures sent to me a year or two back...and looking good. The Maunsell Forts I understand. There we are in close up... that's the same Forts shown in the background of picture two in post 3659.
Our 'roving correspondent' gets about for sure.

I didn't know there was gold in that thar muddd in Folkestone Harbour Vic. Well I never! Yours truly is searching for his shovel as we speak...

Also don't miss the earlier post no 3658 which features, among others, pictures by Patrick and Andrew T.

A welcome picture above there just in from another Andrew, this time Andrew Taylor a former P&O employee, which shows the dredging currently taking place in Folkestone Harbour. Many thanks Andrew - good to see that picture. A very interesting shot.

Thanks for this picture above Patrick...interesting to see the comparative sizes of the dredgers there in that shot.

Patrick rounds up the general situation for us nicely below here ...

"
Photo of the newly arrived dredger 'Causeway' alongside the 'Sospan Dau'
that has been working within the DHB DWDR Exclusion zone dredging the
bed that will become the yacht marina and marine curve, together with
work that has started on the new lock cut. 24 hour dredging has been in
progress for the past few days as well as land based work placing rocks
to aid construction before piling starts at the end of this month.

"
Many thanks guys for the pictures above. Smiley

A couple now from yours truly from Friday morning...
They show the large floating crane Rambiz being towed southwards. She had earlier left Vlissingen but her destination was unclear on the AIS. First shot looks across Cruise Terminal Two where there is already a platform crane in operation...but one on a smaller scale. Final shot is a zoomed in close up - not great but you get the drift... quite a whopper isn't it!

Great work on that post below Mike (3655) ..nice pictures and info from the teeth of the dredging action. Smiley

Thanks Del and Vic for the comments as ever.
