Don't get too excited folks - that is an old picture above. But, as Mike has been mentioning the Balloon 'flypast' I remembered that it happened before and there we are above. The picture dates from April 2011. It predates the Sea News pages but not Doverforum.com of course...as you can see from the imprint. The picture is totally genuine but it looks sort of unreal...who could imagine so many hot air balloons at once in the sky over the port and beyond.
That's one for Mark.
That was the funniest story Mark - had me laughing out loud for sure. Naughty red faces all round there.
Those are good pictures of the Havila Phoenix Mike..when you consider the conditions over the past few days you did well there.

Looking forward to hearing about the balloon race. Many years ago Channel Gliding Club up at Waldershare Park hosted a similar mass cross-channel dash by 20-odd microlights. One pilot made three fundamental errors, though. Firstly, insufficient fuel was not a good plan. Secondly, his girlfriend was none too pleased to get her feet wet following the ditching and subsequent rescue in mid-Channel. And to top it all off, his wife was most intrigued to find out in the papers that he had female company on a claimed solo expedition when things went splash. How long he spent in the doghouse on his return is not recorded

Take a look on AIS for the 'pleasure craft' TRIONYX who is driving around Dover, presumably on a trailer, with her AIS switched on !
Noticed her earlier coming down Jubilee Way & a few minutes ago she was up at Temple Ewell . . . .

Nice to see some sunlight in Paul’s pix this morning after several days of fog.
Interesting DWDR activity with many more support craft expected as the work cranks up.
Our old friend TOPJACK has returned & is parked temporarily in Eastern Docks & a few days ago a 'crew boat' called GRUMPY was in the Tidal Basin & may well still be there.
After a couple of days on the Eastern Arm the HAVILA PHOENIX sailed late afternoon on Monday & on Tuesday morning was approaching the Humber bound for Immingham.
Patchy fog for her departure.
Today’s cross-Channel balloon ‘race’ has been postponed yet again, the weather has to be perfect. [post 3606].

The picture above shows the scale of the Exclusion Zone. You can see there the small boats from the Seasports Centre heading back to the inner harbour and suddenly the trip has become a bit of a long oul haul...particularly when its a wee bit choppy. They now have to negotiate their way around the full extent of the Exclusion Zone. Changing but exciting times.
Here's a cropped version below of the pic above.
We have seen the workboat Smit Stour previously a number of times, more recently doing some survey work in the harbour prior to the Exclusion Zone's arrival but probably linked to it. Here she is again in the pic below..picking up a crew member on sunday morning from the Crosswall Quay. The lifeboat is normally there in that spot...but with it being sunday morning she was out in her usual training action. And speaking of the lifeboat, we will have some new pictures tomorrow on all that. Still yet to process those...fortunately we have plenty of general images in reserve which is just as well, as we have been visually hampered over the past two days by a thick ghostly fog. Shiver me timbers!
Indeed Del its going to get very noisy around here...but all in the name of progress. Yours truly might need to dust off the old headphones to try and numb the pain...now where did I put that Pink Floyd stuff!
Vic yes you keep an eye on them and if they dont do it right you can give them a good finger wagging. We will continue with the pictures...hopefully we will get lots more good shots.
Thanks guys.

New Safety Exclusion Zone signals start of DWDR Marine Activity
____________________________________________________
A new marine safety exclusion zone has been established in Dover Harbour as the Dover Western Docks Revival (DWDR) marine civil engineering gathers momentum.
The safety zone will provide a marked delineation between the dedicated swim and leisure zone and the marine construction area to the east of the Prince of Wales Pier. The zone will be defined by the Prince of Wales Pier to the west and the shoreline to the north.
This is an extension to the existing 50m safety zone which was in place, adjacent to the Prince of Wales Pier, during recent height reduction works. This is essential to ensure the safety of all marine and leisure users during the construction and piling phases of the project.
The safety zones will be signposted at various locations along the seafront Esplanade. Due to the waterborne noise generated by the piling activity swimming prohibition notices will also be posted advising when it is safe to swim.
The Port of Dover General Manager of Operations and Harbour Master, Paul Brown, said: "For their own safety marine and leisure users may not enter the restricted area at any time as indicated by the line of buoys shown in yellow in the diagram.
"During construction, marine users should expect to see a significant increase in construction craft movements in and around the Western docks. These include large-scale dredgers, crane barges, multi-cats/tugs and safety boats.
"Marine users are therefore advised to navigate with caution at all times and to take directions from Dover Port Control (VTS) when required."
The safety zone will be in place throughout the construction period.

Thanks for that Mike - great info as usual in the post below. Very enjoyable read.
Well done Patrick..nice shot and info below there.
We had a great symphony of sounds yesterday..the foghorns counterpointing the warning wail of the electronic pulse, as the thick fog continued...and we have more of the same this morning as I write.

There is a chance that there may be a mass Cross-Channel balloon flight, with up to 100 balloons on Tuesday morning, weather permitting.
The flight has already been delayed several times, but is currently on 'amber alert'
For more info Google 'cross channel balloon flight' & look for 'Datum RPO Cross Channel World Record Flight' when the results come up.
They will probably pass over the coastline in the Dover area around dawn onwards.
DHB have issued some interesting 'Notices to Mariners' regarding the DWDR work.
Google 'dover port notices to mariners' & look for Notices 17, 20 & 21 of 2017.
Paul was querying Rouen as the destination for the BRAEMAR on Saturday, she can certainly get up there up the Seine, passing Le Havre en route, a nice run up the river.
She's currently there at the moment [Sunday night] showing 'URO' which is the code for Rouen, maybe the wrong name was punched into their AIS before they left Dover.
A busy river up to & beyond Rouen & back in the last century I was there several times on tankers & bulkers of around the same length as the BRAEMAR.
Traffic above Rouen is mostly barge traffic 'cos of the low bridges, but back in the 60s there was a company running a regular cargo service between London & Paris using former colliers nicknamed 'flat irons' which were designed to pass under the low Thames bridges running up to Thames-side power stations.

Swedish flagged 40m sailing yacht "ELIDA V" arrived yesterday with the intention of refuelliing en route from Portugal to Goteborg. Unfortunately she was too long with too deep a draft for the berth. Departed to try her luck for Ramsgate late afternoon and was later heading for Lowestoft.

Seeker returns after a long day out there in the frontline...the guys are all ready to dock in the late friday evening. Took several pictures but as the light was so low over the longer range they were all blurred...just about getting away with this one. Today yours truly was all primed up to get some pictures of the Baltic Klipper arriving but the fog came in quicker than the Klipper...where did it come from!!?
Well done Ed. Those Duzgits get about for sure..always good to see an item or two from Dunkerque. The Calais Seaways is looking good following the refit.

A pic above there is from last evening as Braemar departed in misty hazy conditions. The AIS thingy said she was off to Rouen but mentioned it wasn't a recognised Port...so at a guess I would suggest Le Havre was the probable destination. Rouen a nice place to visit for sure...hope all enjoy. There is more in Colette's Cruise Visit post see 3586. Sea conditions were nice and calm as she moved away.
In the foreground there you can see some of the extensive Exclusion Zone just laid. Will have much more on this tomorrow morning monday. Just sorting it out as we speak.
Thanks for that Del - yes indeed it might all come down to the dumpling helicopter fly-in..
Yes Howard all the team do a great job. The coffee table book could be a real idea.

The Big Sky...
Very dramatic and colourful skies over the Port during the past few mornings and there we are above. Breath-taking visuals in reality, one hopes the pictures do nature at least partial justice. The Port of Dover provides a great and sizzlingly colourful early morning departure point for that magical trip to France.
Look at the way that Jet Stream casts a shadow on the higher clouds above in picture 2...extraordinary. The sky never ceases to amaze. And speaking of jet streams...here is an extra picture below from last weeks colder skies...the jet stream super-highway right over the Port, right over East Kent.. Don't be alarmed re the light spots in the picture...they are not invading aliens, nosiree Bob...just light spots on yours trulys olde Nikon lens.
Brexit could throw up a few grisly surprises Del as the customs situation could get tricky for one and all. I will have to have food supplies air-lifted in to the observation tower..
Very nice collection of pix below from Ramsgate - well done Sarah. Great work there, great to see.
The Braemar is in Port today.
Its April 1..All Fools Day...crikey...no fools around here though
