After the glamour of the AIDA SOL & the COSTA PACIFICA an abrupt change to two of the workboats of Riley Marine Services on the pontoon in the Tidal Basin a few days back.
The DOVER WORKER is the pointy one & the DOVER CONSTRUCTOR is the squarish one [a catamaran actually]
Dover-based Riley Marine Services take part in marine projects all over Southern England & are often seen working in the harbour & will be involved in the Western Docks works.
On the same day one of the George Hammonds launches was blocked-up in the Boatyard.
A little more elegant than the Rileys !
Re Howard’s photo of the memorial it was the German one that I was referring to.
More than 'banter' methinks, Howard, but a significant piece of history, & Dover history too, lets hope that Political Correctness doesn't sweep it away.
I thought that I had a ‘digital’ of it but can’t find it, so it must be amongst my slides somewhere.
Perhaps the Gruppenfuhrer can descend to earth from his observation post & take a photo ?

The penny drops now Mark, I did laugh the first time I saw the slogan, just normal wartime banter and it is a given that someone will paint a comment on a bomb/missile.

Actually, Howard, it isn't the one I'm thinking of, which prompted me to think that the one I had in mind might have been removed, but 10 minutes on Streetview confirmed that it's still in place (or was in August 2015) and sympathetically integrated into the remodelled prom. It's a German memorial marking the number of shells lobbed across the briney from gun positions at Sangatte, and was originally installed in Calais before being donated to Dover by the Calais British Legion at the end of the war. I can't find a photo that isn't copyrighted to post, so perhaps a local can snap it and do the honours. It sits opposite the regency flats between the Marina Hotel and Western Docks. You'll recognise it because it has a picture of a shell being ridden by stylised German Eagle and the message "Es Flogen Gegen Engeland" which roughly translates as "These flew to England". I'd be very insulted by this overtly aggressive Nazi message if I wasn't half German myself. Oh, and apparently it's fabricated from recycled armour plate from one such gun position.

HEAVY METAL: Majoring on the AIDA Sol this time...
As mentioned in the earlier post...above there we have the AIDA Sol setting off at around 8pm last night for Hamburg. In the background of picture one is of course the Costa Pacifica. It was a great day here in Dover.
Earlier in the day the AIDA lowered her lifeboats no doubt on a training exercise...yours truly snatched a long range shot looking across the harbour. PB.

GREAT VISITATIONS!
It was a great day for giant ships here at the Port of Dover...and there above we have both on show. They are of course the Costa Pacifica and the AIDA Sol.
I also hope to show pictures of them leaving if the shots are up to it...the AIDA Sol left us about 5 mins to 8pm and the Costa Pacifica left us at 8.25pm. it was getting dark and visibility was poor by then. The pictures are still in the camera but if any good will show some later. Coincidently both ships went to Hamburg in Germany...its clearly all happening in Hamburg. The tooted each other terrifically last evening as they parted company.
The above pictures were taken morningtime... and here below we have another one of the gynormous Costa Pacifica in the late pale sun.
Huge thanks to Ed for those shots below, you kept us going and great angles too.
Thanks to ColetteB all round. Glad you enjoyed the pictures from the guys.
You would have to do some frantic paddling to keep up with those swimmers...wowser!

Great shots Ed of the Gigantic Costa Pacifica & AIDAsol
I love the terrific action pix of the swimmers Mr B, honing their skills in the harbour, if only I'd known I would have joined them, err.. for a paddle at least
I also love the pic of the Black Watch, post 2681 'listing to port' in the choppy waters, she looks like she had one to many Great photo Mike J, she is a wonderful cruise ship & one of my favourites. I love her new colours. I saw her go out late Friday night looking splendid in an array of sparkling lights, 'Shine Bright like a Diamond'

The PORT of DOVER has mightily excelled itself today with visits from two of the most stunning ships imagineable. Both the Costa Pacifica and the AIDA Sol are in Port and wow are they a huge and totally fabulous pair, as mentioned on ColetteB's cruise List earlier.
We will have pictures in due course but first I must do a promised swimming special.
The guys were out in multiple force yesterday Sunday all with their eye on the full channel swim no doubt. Powerful swimmers came from all over the place...staying in the nearby hotels and so on. It was a dynamic and big big day for sure...there must have been more than a hundred at a guess...no no..maybe a couple of hundred. The water was packed. Very exciting indeed.
Some swimmers in action below...
in attendance the Channel Swimming support vessel SUVA..
the harbour patrol guys also popped into the action.
We will have pictures of the hugely exciting ships for sure. Bear with. They came in early so no pictures as yet.

Well done Ed with the pix below...great angle that. That's another one above of the same ship...the Hellas Reefer arriving this morning as seen from yours trulys observation tower. It was a gorgeous morning but it did cloud over a tad as the day progressed...but like they say, you cant have everything. PB.

These pictures were taken a few evenings back. Out in the near harbour we had two motor launches at rest. One was called W2 and the other was called Twister...and that's Twister above there in the pale evening sun ...at one point they were all enjoying drinks on the deck and very nice too. Clearly my invitation got lost in the post. In the background you can see the pilot boat blasting by at full tilt.
Looking eastwards at the same time..roughly..this rainbow lit up the White Cliffs. Now, none of you guys need go up there with your shovel looking for that pot of gold, as I have already been and I got it....so there!
I'm posting this from Monte Carlo.
Below an extra rainbow shot from a previous time...

That sea was very rough yesterday for the arrival of the Black Watch...you might say it was a bracing day and no mistake. A bit hazy too .. but glad to see we already have some excellent pictures from the lads below. She came about 5pm and headed off about 10.30pm or so heading for the fjords, with all lights gloriously blazing. The wind had dropped somewhat by then. The new dark hull seems somehow to add considerably to her image.
The Braemar is in with us today...( ooops not for long, she left us about 9am)

Late Friday afternoon saw the arrival of the COTE DES DUNES, followed by the BLACK WATCH who entered with a distinct port list due to the northerly winds which were gusting to 40 knots.
The local fishing vessel BOY LUKIE was pitching well in the big swells outside the port as she entered after the BLACK WATCH.

Top shot shows the workboat Royal Charlotte again, this picture taken from the seafront a couple of days ago.. The vessel is acting as a safety boat because of the construction on the Prince of Wales Pier...so I believe anyway. We have also seen another vessel carrying on the same role. I guess its a Health and Safety thing.
Following on from Jeremy's pix a couple of days ago of the swirling fog, here we are with another one showing the fog beginning to pull away from the seafront in dramatic style.
Many thanks to John W below...Mike will be glad to hear that piece of info. Very welcome John.
Good pictures by Mike below...the painting is indeed fascinating. Excellent!
Interesting picture from Ed below there too...goes to show that there is never a dull moment around here, there is always something unusual happening.

John -
Thank you very much indeed for identifying the EMU set on the painting.
The IBERICA HAV is alongside Cruise-1 & unusually is DISCHARGING grain into lorries.
Don't remember seeing that before, usually the coasters LOAD grain here for export.
The BLACK WATCH is coming up from Southampton & her AIS is giving an ETA of 1700.

Hi all. This is my first ever post anywhere so please excuse any protocol errors. I am a retired train driver with forty years service the last thirty at Dover. The stock shown in the painting is l believe to be class 411 or usually called c.e.p. units. The livery shown in the painting is the old Network Southeast, commonly known as Notwork Southeast.l hope this answers the question.
