Saturday was certainly a day of gloom & fog with the high-pitched Eastern Docks foghorn bleeping away every ten seconds & the occasional deeper grunt from a ferry, but here's a couple of pix taken on a sunnier day.

Post 3379 was a photo taken by Ted Ingham in his Coastguard days of the Coastguard spotter aircraft making a low-level entry thru the Eastern Entrance.
Ted has kindly sent a few more showing G-BCEN making a similar approach to Langdon Coastguard & says -

. . . . .The pilots would often try out their low flying skills and come in at sea level, climb the gap at Fan Bay and then as low as they could over the operations room with the intention of scaring the - - - - out of us.
99 percent of the time they succeeded . . . . .

Thanks Ted !

Would have loved to have been in the cockpit with the pilots . . . .

Thick fog greets us all this morning at the Port of Dover as the day wakes up. The lonely electronic bell wails out, its eerie sound skimming across the surface of the unseen water. There are no visuals...no further pictures for the moment. However in the best tradition of these things, here is a shot from an earlier time, Thursday morning to be exact, as the early-ish ferry makes its way to Calais under a dramatic sky.

Some pictures above and below of Emerald as she waits patiently in the outer harbour before moving into position at the Cargo Terminal. Pictures from two days ago...she also had a quick cargo turnaround and is now back in Vlissingen in the Nederlands ( or Netherlands ).

And now...an interesting item to ponder from the RHA ( Road Haulage Association ).

Brexit and Road Haulage – The Customs Control Danger
____________________________________________

Brexit could seriously damage Britain’s food supplies because customs problems could cripple supply chains. The Road Haulage Association is warning that unless the Government negotiates the right customs controls during forthcoming Brexit talks the UK’s sensitive food supply could be seriously damaged. The current rationing of vegetables has highlighted the danger– and the problems with supplies of lettuce could be just the tip of a dangerous iceberg on the horizon.

Commenting, RHA chief executive Richard Burnett said: "Nearly 30% of all food consumed in the UK comes from the EU and it all arrives in lorries. At the moment, the process is seamless – it’s as easy to deliver from Milan to Manchester as it is from Manchester to Leeds as far as customs processes are concerned.

"After Brexit, that will no longer be the case, and we have to get the new processes right. Otherwise the system for getting food into the country could grind to a halt. "

The RHA fears that massive queues of lorries could build up at ports with not enough experienced staff to cope with a backlog while fresh food supplies rot.

"We are not re-assured by recent government statements," Richard Burnett added. "The White Paper suggests that HMRC has a world-class customs service. For EU continental road haulage it has NO system. It will face new challenges and government must recognise that and assure business that HMRC will have whatever resources it requires to get the job done."

Richard Burnett concluded: "The RHA welcomes the government’s commitment to cross-border trade being as frictionless as possible. But customs process for containers and air freight will not work for the millions of trucks that move through Dover and our ports.

"There are nearly 4.5 million journeys between the UK and Europe each year that are HMRC-free at the moment. These trucks carry jobs, components, products – and 30% of our food."

Wednesday morning & the first signs of work for the new channel between Wellington Dock, through the Esplanade & the beach & into the new marina.
The boatyard has been cleared & the marine engineering works there have been moved elsewhere.

According to the 'Kent Live' website the new public pier & marina will open earlier than expected -

. . . . . a new marina and pier in Dover will be ready sooner than expected – with port chiefs predicting both to open by December 2018.
The two projects – part of the £120 million Western Docks Revival – will join a new cargo terminal, shops, cafes and bars on the seafront.
Residents and tourists can walk the new pier and a curved walkway surrounding the marina from that date onwards.
Shops, bars, cafes and restaurants will be added to the marina at a later date – with initial services expected to be pop-up shops and stalls.
Originally, the port gave a blanket opening date of simply "2019" for the entire Western Docks Revival project . . . . . .

The new pier & the 'Marina Curve' [the western side of the marina] will give excellent views of the town & the castle, but sadly it looks as though views of the shipping in Eastern & Western Docks will be obstructed by the new breakwater at the end of the Marina Curve unless the public is allowed access to the new breakwater which seems unlikely.
Even then views of the cruise ships will still be obscured.

NEDERLAND REEFER

Went for the ultra close ups above there with a wider view to follow below... you can see the crew on the bridge above..

Following along from Ed's post 3490 of the Nederland Reefer at the Cargo Terminal...there we are above...a trio of pictures of her arrival taken just prior to Ed's shot. She is carrying quite a load there as you can see. The ship had a relatively quick turnaround and has since left us for Hamburg.. her slot at the Cargo Terminal was quickly taken by Emerald, which appeared to have been waiting off Deal for the Nederland to vacate. Busy busy and long may it continue.

Looking at the Channel Traffic Live Map I see Emerald has also departed the Port, must have done so in the wee small hours...will have a pic or two to follow. Have some shots still in camera...needing to catch up ...

A couple of pictures to follow here below of nature in the raw...not everyone's cup of tea I'm sure but it is real life as we know it. In recent times we have seen a sharp rise in the number of crows/ravens scavenging and scurrying about down here at the waters edge. It used to be essentially the domain of the seagull only, but as we say .. more and more of our dark feathery friends have infiltrated, so pickings must be good...well as you can see. These were not the most gruesome of the pictures taken...

The familiar Holyhead Bay below making her way out to the cable laying Olympic Triton yesterday morning at 07.30. The vessel toos and fros daily presumably with supplies and/or workforce etc etc.. The sea was a cold steel grey...

Well done Ed getting Nederland Reefer at the terminal...and our ol friend David Church. Great stuff.Smiley
I will be able add a couple of the Nederlands arrival in due course as well.

Lidl Granted Planning Consent for New Dover Store
__________________________________________

Dover District Council has granted planning consent for a new Lidl store with 159 parking spaces on a 1.21ha site in Whitfield. The store will create 40 new jobs when it opens in late 2017.

Lidl has over 650 stores nationwide and is one of Europe’s leading discount retailers. The planned Dover store will feature Lidl’s new store format with wider aisles, customer toilets and baby changing facilities, and self-service tills. The store will stock a range of 2,000 products, including a bakery.

Representing a seven figure investment Lidl joins a growing list of new retailers attracted to Dover. The 42,200 sq. ft. Honeywood Retail Park opened in 2015 with B&M, Pets at Home, Bensons for Beds, and KFC, and construction is underway at the Dover St James development which provides 157,000 sq. ft. of new retail and leisure space in Dover town centre.

Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council, said: "I am delighted that Lidl are coming to the Dover district. They have clearly seen the potential of a growing district and I am sure many local residents will welcome the increased choice that a new Lidl store brings to the area."

Ends

There you are above...some news there for all those who like shopping in LIDL and there's a growing band it seems. That store will cater for the immediate and wider region. Looks impressive. Thanks to DDC for the info once again.

Picture below of the freezing sea mist rolling in over a spooky looking Western Heights. That looks a cosy cabin bottom left, best to be in there with the ghouls and hobgobblins on the loose...

Great work below Sarah with the Channel Dash pictures from Ramsgate. Great pictures and its tough getting pictures at the moment.
So a big well done with those.

Wow! Patrick the guys on the tug must be distributing free mackerel...they have a lot of gull fans there. Nice pic.

Afon Lligwy in mid-survey-mode yesterday morning close to the Clock Tower at the Western Docks. This was just after it had ceased snowing although don't check the time on the clock as it's forever midnight on there...but at least its right twice a day! It was all too gloomy yesterday as it is again today so far, the picture had to be brightened considerably.

From a day or two earlier we have the picture below. Its evening time and Tug Doughty ploughs its weary way homeward after a long day, while Afon Lligwy carries on surveying for a while longer in the foreground....

A couple of further pictures here of the snowy morning here in Dover. Top shot looks west towards the Lord Warden House and beyond, and shows a peaceful and quiet Dover Western Docks...below we have the tangled weave of the frozen woods before the famed Dover Castle. You can see the nearby 'platform' where on sunny days we spot the foxes. Bet they are cold up there right now...hopefully as snug as possible in a deep deep lair. PaulB.

Thanks for the comments about our departure to live in Blackpool. I love Dover so it is a big wrench but we shall see how it goes! Still working two weeks on, two weeks off, on the Delft Seaways so I am now a commuter!

Oooh its a cold oul morning. We have a scattering of snow lying about here in Dover and a chill factor that would give a chill factor a chill. Following on from Ed's picture of the Southern Bay in post 3477...there we are above with another one of the ship departing the Port of Dover but from an earlier day.

Will see now if a picture or two of the snow will be possible.

Thanks for that info below Mike re the traffic situation, great stuff....just to add too that the all new York St intersection is now operational.
The roundabout there is gone for good, no tears will be shed ....
Fascinating collection of pictures there below from our roving correspondent Sarah over there in Ramsgate. Don't miss those.
Will be a great project restoring that lifeboat.

Ed - Good luck with the move to Cleveleys, hope that all goes well.
You'll be able to use a Blackpool tram as part of your commute !
Good photo of the 20-year old SOUTHERN BAY - nice to see a ship with derricks, a rare sight these days.

Interesting sequence from Sarah & it'll be interesting to watch the progress of the restoration of FRANCES FORBES BARTON.
I see that the 'Friends' have a Facebook page & there's much info on her on the internet, [the lifeboat, not Sarah !].

Here's a map that shows road closures that are by now wellknown to Dover 'locals' but may be of interest to visitors.

The swingbridge is closed to vehicles & this has reduced access to the seafront area where there are further road closures.
Drivers seeking the Marine Parade, De Bradeleis etc entering Dover from the A20 will have to go right to the Eastern Docks roundabout to turn around before joining the Marine Parade, unless they know their way thru the town.

There will be no public parking in Union Street which will be restricted to Marina users.

The closures are in connections with the Western Docks project & the planned cut thru from the beach to Wellington Dock & may remain for several years due to construction works.

For the present there is pedestrian & cyclist access from the Promenade/Esplanade to Union Street across the swingbridge which will continue to operate for yachts.

Interesting that DHB has Jubilee Way as the A20, I always thought it was on the A2 !

ICE RINK CHRISTMAS - THE SUMMARY

Port of Dover White Cliffs Christmas - a resounding success.
_______________________________________________

The numerous people, perhaps as many as 100,000, who visited the historic Cruise Terminal One building for the first ever Port of Dover White Cliffs Christmas event during its eight-week duration from November 2016 to January 2017 have been very generous in their feedback.

The event hosted a real ice rink, a Christmas Market, Christmas workshops, food & drink concessions, music, entertainment and Father Christmas in his grotto.

The ice rink was the star of the show with 14,846 people getting their skates on and taking to the ice during the public sessions. In addition to this, 999 school children had exclusive sessions on the ice as well as Local Brownie Groups, Dover Rugby Club and Dover SmArt project’s young carers. Father Christmas greeted over 1360 delighted children in his magical Station Platform Building Grotto during the festivities.

Local companies provided all of the food and drink concessions. These included the wonderful Cockles & Co Champagne Bar, Riverside Catering, Hits the Spot French Crepes, The Street Pantry, That Burger, The Candy People and Simply Ice Cream, all supplying local produce from Kent.

Crowds were kept entertained with performances from the superb wartime singing duo Swingtime Sweethearts, Kent’s Michael Bublé tribute Jason Allen Sway and live music from local band Rudy Warman and the Heavy Weather. They were also treated to amazing ice dances from professional skaters Alexandra, Elliott and Edward Appleby. The youngsters from local dance troupe KC’s Dancers also received a warm reception from the crowds as they performed their lively dance routines.

The Port of Dover team was extremely grateful to the local sponsorship support for the event which was received from; E. J. Dittons Electrical Contractors, P. Summers & Sons, Charlier Construction Ltd, Megger Ltd, W. Enterprises, YMS Travel, Dover Transport Museum, Signscope Ltd, Dover Christmas Trees, Harbour Print, PowerHire UK, Cloke Scaffolding, Megger instruments Ltd. Along with RBS Bank, Moto Hospitality, Jackson Civil Engineering and DFDS Seaways who provided their record breaking Lego Ship for the official opening of the event on the 19th November.

Port of Dover Chief Executive, Tim Waggott said: "I am thrilled that our first White Cliffs Christmas event proved to be such a remarkable success for the entire local community, putting Dover firmly on the map as a destination for festive family fun. The event was almost entirely resourced by local companies, producers and entertainment ensuring that our economy received the maximum benefits.

"Along with local residents, people attended from all over the country as well as some day-trippers from France.

"The traditional English Christmas theme was particularly well received by visitors and concessions as a refreshing change from the more customary German themed markets that have previously been popular in other destinations.

"Event feedback was overwhelmingly positive from both visitors and concessions, and as a result of these successes I really hope to make the White Cliffs Christmas an annual festive tradition for Dover in the future."

Yes indeed re the above .. the whole thing was a terrific success and most enjoyable. Yours truly was down there three times...it helped at one point to take my doctor daughter briefly away from the frontline stresses of the NHS (just look at those NHS reports on the tv... sheesh!) It was great jolly fun.
Night falls on a cold seafront earlier this week.

Gosh Ed I am stunned that you are no longer up there in Victoria Park. Wow!
Well good luck indeed and I see you are still on the Dover Strait which is great.
I hope you both will be very happy up there in Cleveleys nearer the family.
Nice pictures below too...I think we should probably feature more people.
Smiley

Well said Vic...yes the page is seen all over the country and indeed world...we have had communications from
as far away as the USA and Australia/New Zealand. We aim to paint a positive picture for Dover.

My wife and I departed from our flat in Victoria Park on 26th January, after twenty happy years, and moved to Blackpool to be near our daughters and their offspring. The removals van was not big enough and we had to do it in two steps but are now comfortably ensconced in Cleveleys near the prom.
